The Science
Neato's Pet Supplement is scientifically developed for the holistic health of dogs.
Combining the proven benefits of omega 3 glucosamine, chondroitin and curcumin (active ingredient in turmeric) which have natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
All of this means that curcumin combined with whole green-lipped mussel powder may be beneficial for pets suffering from any condition involving long-term inflammation in the body. Examples include skin conditions or asthma, but perhaps the most common one is arthritis.
The green-lipped mussel powder (GlycOmega™) we use is harvested in the pristine waters of Marlborough in New Zealand using the whole mussel not just an extract. Using an advanced flash dry process ensure the bioactive proteins are not denatured and essential nutrients and Omega-3 lipids are retained. This differs to mussel oil or other mussel extracts which do not include all the important protein and amino acid components.
The antioxidant properties curcumin have been shown in vitro to inhibit carcinogenic reactive oxygen species (ROS), including superoxide anions, hydroxyl radicals, nitrites, and peroxides. Curcumin can stimulate both the activation of antioxidant enzymes and the decrease in expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
Antioxidants protect the body from the damaging effects of free radicals (by-products of the body's normal chemical processes). Free radicals attack healthy cells, which changes their DNA, allowing tumors to grow. When cells grow old or become damaged, they die, and new cells take their place. Sometimes this orderly process breaks down, and abnormal or damaged cells grow and multiply when they shouldn't. These cells may form tumors (either benign or malignant). Curcumin induces oxidative stress in tumors. It binds to several enzymes in tumors, to induce mitochondrial damage, increase ROS production and ultimately induce tumor cell death.
There are numerous scientific publications for the benefits of turmeric extract and Green-Lipped Mussel.
Research suggests that green-lipped mussels (GLM) can help dogs with arthritis and other conditions that involve chronic inflammation. In one study, 83% of dogs on GLM had lower pain scores and fewer signs of arthritis after six weeks. GLM can help reduce inflammation and stiffness in joints. In one study, dogs fed GLM showed improved gait assessments after 30 to 90 days. GLM contains high levels of omega-3 and other fatty acids. In one study, dogs fed GLM had greater concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids in their systems.
